Adding audio to _noisecrypt
If you want to record your audio and stream it to other people, follow these steps:
- Open the _sludge app.
- Click the
+
button in the bottom right corner to view the stream creation page. - Click the
Create new stream
button, you will then see information regarding your new stream. - Click the box labeled
Admin
. Another box will appear underneath it. - Take note of the URL displayed in this box, for now we will refer to this as STREAM URL.
- Click the
Hubs
tab. - If you don't have a hub URL, follow these steps to create a hub URL before continuing.
- Paste your hub URL into the text input and click the
Submit
button. - Click the icon in the top right corner, it will open the _splutter app.
- Click
Activate inputs
. - Give permission to your browser to access one of your audio input devices.
- Test the audio output from your audio channel(s) by clicking one of the
Send to output channel
buttons. - When you have chosen a channel with audio, select the corresponding
Upload input channel
button. - Select STREAM URL displayed directly above this button.
You are now streaming live audio! You might want to try listening to audio in _noisecrypt too.
Listening to audio in _noisecrypt
If you want to experience the cut-up soundscapes of _noisecrypt, follow these steps:
- Open the _syllid app.
- Click the
Start stream
button. - If you don't have a hub URL, follow these steps to create a hub URL before continuing.
- Paste your hub URL into the text input above the
Add hub
button. - Click the
Add hub
button. - Click one or more of the
Send to output channel
buttons.
You are now listening to _noisecrypt! If you can't hear anything, it might be because you need at least one stream connected to your hub URL. Learn how to add audio to _noisecrypt.
Creating a hub to find streams
Hubs connect the recordings to the listeners. You'll need at least one hub to share and connect everything together. To get your own hub, follow these steps:
- Open the _sortition app.
- Click the
Create New Hub
button. This will show you the hub URL you've created. - Click the
Copy URL
button. This will copy the displayed hub URL to your clipboard. - You can now use this URL for:
- Share this URL with other people you want to collaborate with on _noisecrypt.

_noisecrypt comprises 4 distinct apps. These components work together to create a sonic space. To learn more about the concept and background, visit the about page.

_sortition
A hub server for responding to requests with random redirects.
_sludge
An audio stream server based on modern live streaming systems.
_splutter
In-browser audio live stream recording, encoding and uploading, the input interface to a sludge stream.
_syllid
In-browser audio live stream playback, the output interface to a sludge stream.
Future
Currently, the primary goal is to get more people involved in each of the three aspects:
- using _noisecrypt as an instrument
- experiencing _noisecrypt by participating as a listener
- contributing to the codebase and setting up their own servers
